Chapter 8 - The Prisoner

Maggie rolled over on to her side. She immediately put her hand to her bandaged head. The pain was unbearable. She closed her eyes and grimaced as she tried to remember what had happened the night before to give her such an awful headache. Her eyes shot wide open when someone moved next to her!

“Good morning, Maggie.” Beckett turned over and smiled at her.

Maggie jumped out of the bed and immediately regretted her actions. Her head spun and the pain engulfed her blinding her. She ran into the wall falling into a slump in the corner.

Beckett just looked at her and shook his head. He got up and went to the door.

“Mercer.” He called annoyed.

Mercer came in and saw Maggie slumped in the corner.

“Take her to her quarters.” He ordered.

Mercer left and returned with two soldiers. One of the soldiers picked Maggie up out of the corner and carried her out of the room. Beckett motioned to Maggie’s dress lying on a chair nearby. The doctor had removed it the night before to fully examine her. Mercer picked it up and gave it to the other soldier. Mercer shut Beckett’s door behind them and took his post again.

Beckett put his hand to his forehead and rolled his eyes. He sighed and licked his lips irritated at Maggie’s stupidity. Beckett was annoyed with Maggie because she had injured herself. He had not expected her to run from the soldiers. His plan was to have the soldiers bring her up to his office after he had dismissed Governor Swann. He was then going to thank Maggie personally for the service she had done for him. Injuring herself negated his plans. He was not happy that Maggie had ruined his plans to seduce her.

Beckett called for a few servants to dress him.

He would think of a new way to seduce Maggie later. Right now he needed to deal with a certain captain, Captain Smythe.

The first soldier lay Maggie down in her bed. The other soldier lay Maggie’s dress across the end of her bed and they left. Maggie groaned. She lay there trying to figure out how she ended up in Lord Beckett’s bed. Last she remembered she was running away from the soldiers that had attacked her down at the docks. How she ended up in Lord Beckett’s bed was beyond her. Maggie was mortified.

He had ordered the soldiers to remove her from his quarters this morning. She hadn’t remembered what had happened between them the night before. He was displeased that she had jumped out of his bed surprised to wake up there and insulted him in the process. How could she have insulted him like that? He had brought her into his chambers after the soldiers had abused her to comfort her and she jumped away from him like he had the plague! Beckett would never ask her to serve him again. Maggie’s heart sank.

When Maggie did not report for her morning duties her mother became very worried. Maggie’s mother finished the breakfast dishes and went to check on her daughter. She knocked on Maggie’s door. There was no answer. She knocked again calling for Maggie. “Maggie?”

“Mum.” Maggie groaned in pain. Her mother rushed into the room hearing the pain in Maggie’s voice. She immediately froze with terror when she saw Maggie’s bandaged head.

“Dear God, Maggie? What happened to you?” She exclaimed. Her mother ran to her side and cradled her in her arms.

Maggie told her mother everything she remembered from the night before. Maggie’s mother was furious!

“How could he allow such behavior?” She exclaimed.

Maggie just shrugged her shoulders. Maggie saw how angry her mother was growing.

“Mum, promise me you won’t confront Lord Beckett, please?” Maggie begged.

“He treats you like this and you wish me to remain silent? I will not! Why he is…” Maggie interrupted her saying weakly, “Mum, please you don’t know what he is like.”

Maggie’s mother just looked down at her in disbelief. Maggie put her hand over her mother’s hand. Her mother calmed down knowing that Maggie was right. Lord Beckett was not one she could just walk up to and confront about such a matter. She would end up in a worse condition than Maggie if she let her temper get the best of her in Lord Beckett’s presence.

Maggie’s mother agreed that she would not say a word to Lord Beckett about any of it. She loved her daughter dearly and did not wish any more harm to befall her. Maggie’s mother nursed Maggie’s throbbing headache.

As Maggie’s mother got up to get Maggie a clean nightgown someone knocked on the door. Maggie’s mother went to the door and answered it. It was the fort physician.

“I am here to change the girl’s bandages.” He said.

Maggie’s mother opened the door the rest of the way and allowed the doctor to enter.

It had been a month since Maggie’s interaction with the soldiers. Her head had healed for the most part. She still got the occasional headache, but they were becoming few and far between. Maggie had resumed her duties as a serving girl at the fort.

Lord Beckett had not called for her since that dreadful evening. She blamed his neglect on herself. She should have been more receptive to him the next morning. She had berated herself for the last few weeks. Cursing herself for not realizing her place in his presence. Maggie wiped a tear from her eye and returned to the laundry duties she held before her.

**

Another month passed before she heard from Lord Beckett. Maggie was in the kitchen assisting in the preparation of the evening feast. There was to be a masquerade ball in Lord Beckett’s honor. Rumors had it that Commodore Norrington had returned with the heart of Davy Jones. Maggie dismissed them as just rumors. Her father being the seaman he was had told her many stories of Davy Jones. She thought them all to be children’s stories he used to get her to sleep at night.

Mercer entered the kitchen, “Maggie.” He called.

Maggie almost dropped the bowl she was carrying. Her mouth hung wide open.

“Don’t stand there with your mouth gaping open, girl! Come here!” Mercer ordered.

Maggie set down the bowl and quickly walked up to him. She lowered her eyes to the ground before her. She was ashamed to be in his presence. She just knew he was aware of everything that had happened two months ago.

“Lord Beckett has a missive for you.” He said as he handed her the letter.

Maggie’s head shot up and she looked him dead in the eye. “A missive for me?” She questioned.

“Aye, a missive for you.” He said sternly.

Maggie took the letter and immediately opened it in his presence.

Maggie,

I do hope you have healed since our last meeting.
I am in need of your services once again. I wish you to
accompany me to the masquerade ball. Wear the dress
that I bought you.

Lord Cutler Beckett

Maggie’s heart skipped a beat. Maggie blinked and reread the letter again.

“Come with me.” Mercer ordered. Maggie followed Mercer into the hall. “I will be at your room at seven this evening to escort you to the ballroom, understand?”

Maggie looked at him surprised at receiving the letter and not totally believing that it was true.

“Understand?” He repeated obviously annoyed with her.

“Aye, I understand.” She replied. With her answer Mercer turned and walked away from her.

Maggie knew it was nearly seven now. She ran up to her room to dress for the evening. She dare not insult Lord Beckett a second time. Maggie swung the door to her room wide open. On her bed was a box and a note. Maggie opened the box. Inside was a golden mask. The note read: For you.
